Looking for comments that will get you traffic on your OWN blog?
Contrary to popular belief, most SEO fanatics these days will tell you that leaving a comment on someone else’s blog posts will NOT improve your own inbound links and Google ranking. Most comment areas are automatically coded with a “No Follow” tag…thus rendering the links you attach to them perfectly useless.
Go ahead…*public sigh* with me. All these rules are frustrating.
“So…what IS the point of commenting, then?,” you yell at me in general irritation? “If commenting on other blogs doesn’t increase traffic, then…”
Hoooooooold up! I never said they don’t increase traffic!! I just said that they don’t improve your number of inbound links (which Google values so highly).
Sure…commenting on other blogs with lazy comments like “Great post!” and “Awesome! Thanks for the info!” is super easy and time efficient…but reading that comment certainly wouldn’t want to make me check out what YOU have to say!
In order for comments to be IN ANY way effective for you, you need to be posting comments that create a conversation or an emotion with the blogger (or other commenters). My general schedule is to comment on about 3 other posts a day. If it’s a high trafficked and active blog, I try to be the first one to comment on the post. This makes sure your name and link don’t get buried at the bottom. Almost every person to comment will see your response.
First, I check to make sure the blog post allows EASY commenting. (Not all bloggers have made commenting on their posts as easy as they should.)
Once that’s been determined…I READ the post!! C’mon…it’ll take like 5-6 minutes! Don’t be a lazy ass…you might learn something!
Finally, I craft a blog comment that I KNOW will generate a reaction! From comments alone, I’ve been asked to guest blog on numerous sites…as well as had the opportunity to connect and join the social circles of some pretty kick ass people!
I've listed 5 of my favorite types of conversation starters to help you get on your commenting game!Click To TweetOh! Two last tips! Make sure to tick that box (where applicable) that tells their blogging system to email you with any responses to your comment. This is super important…since you want to keep the conversations going!
Also, when you link in the provided comment area, try to link to inner pages of your site…like particular posts. When you DO come across a comment area that has replaced their comment tags with a “Do Follow” setting, this will tell Google that every page provides great content…not just your front page!
Below, I’ve listed 5 of my favorite types of conversation starters to help you get on your commenting game!
- The letter! This is one of my favorites…and I’ve found that it generates the most traffic! I write the comment directed at the blogger themselves. For example “Hi Margie!”. This immediately lets the reader know that you aren’t just commenting and running. You’ve read the post and are genuinely interested in who they are as a blogger and company. This comment is generally about 1-2 small paragraphs long…juuuuuuust long enough to be longer than an average quote and to stand out. It’s great to (without stealing the spotlight) include a brief story about why this post connected with you. Then elaborate on what your favorite part of the blog post was. DON’T include a CTA in your comment. This is considered rude in any place other than the link location already provided to you in the comment system.
- Questions! You knew this one was going to be thrown in there somewhere! When you ask a question…especially on someone else’s blog, you are giving them a sense of importance. You have made them the teacher. EVERY blogger wants to feel this way. This is…LITERALLY, the whole point of being a public blogger! We want out readers to come to us for advice in whatever subject we talk about! Make sure your question is not just a basic one…give that blogger a bit of a challenge! Make them say…”Oooo! Good question!” when they read it! When they respond to your question (make sure you have the response notifications on!) head back over to their blog and keep the conversation going! After a few exchanges, they will absolutely be curious about the person behind the avatar.
- Invoke an emotion. This is probably one of the hardest to accomplish…but one of the most effective. The second you connect with someone on an emotional level, it’s in your human nature to want to learn more about them. A fun comment (if it’s genuine) to heap onto a blogger is praise. Not praise for their information…but praise for their time, their knowledge, their love and dedication to their craft, and their product. These are all things an online business person connects DEEPLY with. If your comment makes them smile and want to toot their own horn…they will want to take a peak into your own work!
- Be a fan! There are two ways of doing this. Comment on more than just one post, over a decent period of time. After the fourth or fifth time you post, your name will start to be recognized! Your brand and persona will start to become a constant on the site…kind of like that weird loner in the corner of the bar that you frequent who is ALWAYS THERE! Another way you can do this is simply…TELL them you’re a fan!! Once you tell them that you are not just a reader, but a raving fanatic…they’ll want to check you out (if for no other reason than to feed their own egos…or make sure they don’t need to bust out a restraining order. Looking at YOU owner of IHeartTerraDawn.com!!)
- Offer a challenge! If you think the blogger is incorrect on something, politely give your side of the story. DON’T tell them they are wrong. Remember, this is THEIR house. You can’t just walk into someone’s home and say “You’re wrong!” Well…I guess you can. But I can’t imagine that would foster much goodwill towards your OWN home. (I would expect a good tee-peeing later.) This is, actually, the type of comment that has landed me a few guest blogging posts!! If worded correctly, the blogger will end up doing a bit of recon on this “new information giver”. If your OWN posts are well written and super informative…they may ask you for an interview or a guest post on their own corner of the interwebs.
Whew!!! I hope that helps in the commenting department!! Need a little practice? Comment below!!! 🙂 Get the conversation started! Just so happens…my comment area IS set as “Do Follow”. (Welcome…) So be sure to leave a link to your most recent post!

March 27, 2022 at 9:26 pmHi Terra,
I really enjoyed reading your post! (Tip one handled!) I wonder how many visitors one can garner from strong comments (question - boom!) I also really appreciate your branding. From one dork to another, it really resonates! (Three’s a charm!)
I shared your link on Twitter and I’m following you there, on Insta, and Pinterest 🙂 (who’s such a loyal fan!?)
And a bonus that this is a “do follow”
Thanks! See ya next post!

March 27, 2022 at 9:34 pmHahahahahahaa…..you rock my blogging socks!!!! That was an AWESOME comment, you over achiever, you!!! lol.
To answer your question (BOOM!), out of the 25(ish) blogs I comment on a weekly basis, I average about 5-7 visitors from those sites! I keep track of this via Google Analytics and my WordPress dashboard. 🙂
Also (side note) out of the 25(ish) comments that I leave on blog posts a week, I only average about 1 that is Do Follow (if that). Thank you so much for stoppin’ by Lori!!! I thiiiiink I’ll pop over to your side of the interwebs now!

I definitely feel awkward every time I post a comment. Maybe it’s just the awkward turtle in me. But I’m definitely taking up your post as a challenge. And using your conversation starters to make it that much easier 😀

March 28, 2022 at 2:32 amHi Terra,
Good to now I am already ding a few things right here! But I still learned some very valuable tips here. Especially in HOW to word my comments. And I never would have thought of sharing a link to one of my posts. I always just shared the link to my homepage. Thanks!
Just one question (<- see what I did there? 😉 ): what is this DO/DON'T FOLLOW setting and how can I see whether a blog has it turned on or off? I don't even know whether my own blog has it turned on or off.
Xx, Tanya

March 28, 2022 at 10:51 amHi Tanya!!
Great question!! With SEO, the amount of links you have on other’s websites linking to your own PLUS the amount of links you have LINKING to other people’s websites, matters! A few years ago, the algorithm changed, and Google started saying that a good number of links to have linking to other websites was about 1 per paragraph. (ish….they aren’t SUPER strict…). So, if you write a 1500 word blog post, having 400 links in your post might be considered spam to the Google Bots. SO! WordPress made it so that all of their comment areas are automatically “No Follow” - meaning they are NOT seen and are rendered completely useless as a form of linking out. This ALSO means that when you comment on a blog, the link you leave has no SEO value.
The “Do Follow” tag tells Google that a particular link should be considered valuable to Google. So what I’ve done, is turn off the “no follow” attribute by downloading a wordpress plugin called dofollow. Since I don’t have HUGE volumes of traffic and only average about 10-15 comments on my posts…linking to my commenters is good for SEO. As soon as my traffic and comment # increases exponentially, I can deactivate this plugin to return my comment area to a “No Follow” area. 🙂
I know it’s all a lot to take in!! (Since you don’t know your if your comment area is a “nofollow” attribute, there is a 99% chance that it is. 🙂 You can check by looking through your comment header section of the website.)
I hope that helped!! Let me know if you have any other questions for me!!
Dermot
May 6, 2022 at 11:53 amHi Terra,
Thanks for this post, commenting is an area where I’ve struggled in the past!
I’ve piggybacked on Tanya’s question because your reply partially answers my question. I had read elsewhere that while nofollow links don’t count towards SEO, Google does take note of them. Consequently I’ve read advice that suggests that you should comment mostly within your niche . If you have links (even nofollows) in lots of blogs on all sorts of topics Google may think that you’re spamming. Have you heard this? What are your thoughts on it?
uncorkyourdork
May 6, 2022 at 12:11 pmHi Dermot! Google doesn’t necessarily take stock of “no-follow” links, but they do still have value! When you comment on a blog post (like mentioned in the above post) those nofollow links don’t register as “a recommended link” by the blogger, but they DO register as the link that sent any traffic back to your own posts. I know that’s a little confusing…but think about nofollow links like a recommendation from a friend vs. a recommendation from the yellow pages. A recommendation from a friend is better…but the yellow pages are STILL a valid recommendation!
As far as spamming goes, I recommend posting on blogs of industry professionals AS WELL as anyone who you think might be your ideal customer! Google will ONLY think it is spam if you are posting 100 one sentence comments on various non-related blog posts a day. They are specifically looking for comments that could be bots. If you are commenting on 3-5 posts a day…and making those comments valuable, you are golden!! No matter which blogs you comment on!! 😀

March 28, 2022 at 4:28 amGreat post, commenting is always challenging (even right now 😉 ).
Now that I have my own blog I try to comment more on other blogs, since I know how important it is for the blogger (we all need some feedback to our hard work…)
Btw, I feel that a real avatar will make conversation more personal and motivate more people to comment.
uncorkyourdork
March 28, 2022 at 10:53 amMost definitely, theNeedle! (lol…I feel like I’m talking to someone in the movie Hackers.). Commenting with an avatar absolutely helps! Now that you remind me…I can’t remember if I put one in my profile. Huh. I’ll have to go and double check. lol.

March 28, 2022 at 5:37 amLOL Wait - I have to READ the post before writing a comment? But, but, but ….
Seriously, I have had plenty of traffic come to me from comments I’ve made - sometimes very challenging, upset comments, to be honest - on other blogs. It really doesn’t have anything to do with SEO and far more to do with getting your name out there to be seen by a new audience. (Should I insert my CTA and sales pitch here? …. JUST KIDDING!) I should note that I found you through The Blog Loft and this is my first time visiting, so I’m definitely the loner in the corner of the bar. Anyone want to buy me a beer?
And I have two completely unrelated remarks for you - I LOVE your domain name. It’s fun and memorable. I’ll watch for it in The Blog Loft so that I can see, and comment on, more of your posts. And that’s a very nice custom Pin button you have. It caught my eye.
uncorkyourdork
March 28, 2022 at 10:58 amMarie….I…will buy you a beer! Loners should stick together!! (Although, I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of “lone-ing”. *sigh*)
Thank you so much for the domain name compliment!! That’s kinda like the online version of complimenting someone’s outfit, I think. lmao. 😀 I’ll watch for you in the Blog Loft as well!! It happens to be one of my favorite online bars!!
If you’re talking about the heart that hovers over the page…the Frizzly App allows me to do that! I got a glass of wine and a pencil a few weeks ago and drew a ton hearts. This one was my favorite. 😀
Thanks again Marie!!!

April 6, 2022 at 3:26 pmOkay, Terra-
Dorkification personified for you-what does this mean, please?
‘DON’T include a CTA in your comment’.
Ummmm….’Cold Tacos Allowed’?…..’Crazy Takes All’? …’Cookies Taste Awesome’?….Somehow, I’m guessing you meant none of those three.
Second question….how do you ANSWER people? Jeeper-creepers…if they just leave some dorky thing (‘great post!’, ‘love your writing style’, ‘cookies taste awesome!’ other than a ‘thank you’, how much time are you supposed to invest in responding? I got stuff to do, yo.
Third question…so you’re on a thread for comments somewhere, AND IT WON’T SHUT UP! AND THE COMMENTS ARE STUPID! Is it okay to just tune out, or am I supposed to keep going with the stupid?
Thanks. Oh-and since we’re just meeting for the first time, here’s who I am.

April 6, 2022 at 3:43 pmWell helloooo there Chanler!! (I had to re-type that like 5 times since my last name is Chandler. Head/desk.)
Dorkification personified, huh? If I had to define it, I would say it means “the dorky parts that make you…you.” I think everyone is one a dork. Everyone, even the most perfect person in the world (…we will say Benedict Cumberbatch for this example) is a dork. Dorkification personified is letting your freak flag fly…and becoming MORE than just a faceless person behind a keyboard.
CTA stands for “Call To Action”…but I will TOTALLY accept Tacos. I freakin’ love tacos. Cold…hot…luke warm. ALL TACOS. 0_0
As for your second question…I’m not TOO sure I understand, but I’m gonna take a whack at it! 🙂 If they don’t invest the time in a good comment (i.e. the just leave a “great post!” statement)…certainly don’t TRY to start a conversation. They won’t be back to revisit this post anyways! Leaving a quick “Thanks for stopping by!” is FOR SURE an appropriate response!
If, though, they are leaving an in depth, well thought out comment (such as yourself, kind sir), leaving their questions and comments unanswered is a wonderful opportunity to gain a new follower, fan and fellow blogger just…left in the dirt! To answer your question…it totally depends on how much time the commenter put into their comment AND how much you value them as a reader.
THIRDLY…ALWAYS tune out the stupid. 0_0 Since we are just getting to know each other…here’s a little secret…I HATE stupid people!! Ugh. I love genuine questions, silly people, and fun folk…but I HATE stupid people. 🙂
Thanks for introducing yourself!!! I will check out online interwebs home!

April 22, 2022 at 10:44 amI have been guilty as charged of leaving the generic type of comment even AFTER I have read the blog. No more of that thanks to this article! I also like the advice regarding no conversation is necessary by the blog owner (me), if I have been given a generic comment like “Great post”. The optimistic side of me thought there would be hope in striking up a conversation! This was a great article, I plan on joining your group and following your page! Thanks!

May 6, 2022 at 11:30 amHi Terra,
Loved learning about all these categories-I guess I fit into your ‘letter’ style of commenter (Didn’t have a name for it until I read your post 🙂 ). I like it because it shows that you’ve invested at least a second to take in the person who wrote the post you’re commenting on.
I try to find something that genuinely engages me in a post, that way my comment comes across as genuine. Commenting doesn’t seem to generate much traffic back to my blog, but on a few occasions it has generated great connections with other bloggers/readers.
uncorkyourdork
May 6, 2022 at 12:15 pmThat’s what counts Dave!! 😀 Connections are even more valuable than one person visiting your page! It takes a little practice to write (and come up with the energy to write) a comment that generates intrigue…but the more you post on a blog and the more you participate in the conversations happening on blog posts (including your own), that intrigue will start to develop organically!!
Remember…a GREAT way to get more interest in your own work is to ask questions! A lot of times, someone will read a question…believe that might be able to answer it for you…and head to your post. 🙂

September 9, 2022 at 1:09 pmThis is…BY FAR…the comment that has made me smile the most on my blog so far!!! 😀 I’M SO GLAD WE FOUND EACH OTHER KAMINA!!!!!! lol.
Answer: I do!!!! Mostly on SEO and blogging techniques!! Most of the time, it’s by creating a conversation in the comment area. The key is, you HAVE to treat the comment area kind of a like a conversation you’d have in someone’s home. If you’re all sitting down to drinks, and the homeowner starts up a conversation all about SEO…you contribute to the conversation NOT by saying “Come over to my house and we can talk about it more!” (RUDE!!!!) but by saying “Judy is SOOOO right!! In my own experience….bla bla bla.” If you can really get a GREAT conversation going, they’ll definitely check out your blog! And if your blog topics are sympatico…there is always a chance they will ask to collaborate!! 😀

September 11, 2022 at 4:25 pmYAY TERRA I’m also glad we found each other!! HUGS TO YOU TOOO!!! Okay, I think we are internet friends now. Awesome. I’ll see you in your Facebook group.
I’ve definitely been guilty of the “come over to my house” comment. Your metaphor shows up how douchey that is! I’ve been thinking lately about how to be less selfish on the internet. I want my blog to be like, a free gift of happiness to the world. And I’d like to be more giving when I interact in other people’s online spaces - starting great conversations on their blog topics or responding to their social media output in a way that’s generous to them and not just about attracting attention back to my own blog!! At the same time I’m still keen to pick up collab or guest post opportunities because I just love writing, and I LOVE running around the internet getting in on all the good conversations. Your comment is so helpful for all the above. Yassss!
